After Further Review: Jets-Miami

By popular demand, we're again going to have a post after each game that breaks down some of the controversial decisions from the officiating crew in the game.

Penalty Count

Dolphins 4-32 (leading to zero Jets first downs)
Jets 6-35 (leading to one Dolphins first down)

Note: This does not include penalties that are declined or off-set.

Plays where the call was obvious, uncontroversial or not visible on broadcast footage

Jets Penalties

  • Javon Kinlaw jumped offside.
  • Sam Eguavoen false start. Flinched on a punt.
  • Joe Tippmann illegal block below the waist to negate a 27-yard Breece Hall run. You can't cut block players in space outside the tackle box now and that's what Tippmann did. And the player he blocked definitely would have otherwise been in a position to stop the run, so it's not really something the officials could ignore even though he tried to avoid the block and contact was minimal.
  • Kinlaw jumped offside again.
  • Brandin Echols illegal hands to the face. This was clear as his jam hit the receiver in the helmet.
  • Zack Bailey ineligible receiver downfield. Was only 1.5 yards downfield at most and then held up, which some officials would let go. Strictly speaking, it's a penalty if you're over a yard downfield.

Dolphins Penalties

  • Patrick Paul false start. Flinched before the snap.
  • Paul ineligible man downfield. A good three yards past the line of scrimmage as his timing was off.
  • Illegal shift, apparently because the Dolphins receiver went in motion while another player was not set and then did not himself get set before the snap - but this was not clear from the broadcast footage which didn't go back far enough to see whether someone else was moving when he went in motion.
  • Offensive holding on Terron Armstead. Beaten clean by Will McDonald so he basically tackled him.

Penalties warranting further discussion or explanation

Jets Penalties

  • Illegal forward pass from Ashtyn Davis as he tried to lateral to DJ Reed. This looked like it went backwards but Davis' momentum was going forwards at the time and replays showed he released the ball at the 16-yard line and Reed reached back to catch it at when the ball was at the 17, so it did travel forwards.

Here's a helpful gif from a rugby website showing how the ball can travel forwards even though the recipient is always behind the passer.

Ironically, in rugby this is a legal pass because the passer's hands went backwards even though the ball went forwards. In the NFL, however, the only thing that matters is did the ball go past the point at which it was released and unfortunately for the Jets, it did.

Dolphins Penalties

  • Storm Duck pass interference. Had his hands all over Davante Adams who essentially seemed to give up on making a play on the ball and the back shoulder throw hit him in the back, but it looked like Adams knew he'd get the call and wasn't going to be able to fight through the contact. Duck did at least attempt to locate the ball, so the official might have let this slide.

Notable no-calls etc

Here were some of the other notable missed calls, replay situations and controversial moments:

  • Jonnu Smith stepped out of bounds as he made a sideline catch on the first play incompletion.
  • Isaiah Wynn got away with a blatant illegal block in the back on Solomon Thomas.
  • When Kinlaw got his strip sack on Tyler Huntley, his hand made contact with Huntley's helmet but that would have been harsh to flag this as he was going down at the time.
  • De'Von Achane blatantly flinched before one play but the officials missed it.
  • Quincy Williams had perfect timing when he broke up a pass to Smith with a big hit, despite the announcers implying otherwise.
  • Kendall Sheffield collided with Tyreek Hill as he made a fair catch and probably should have been hit with an interference flag. If he was engaged with a blocker, contact would be permitted but he shoved his blocker into Hill before his momentum carried him into him.
  • Calais Campbell got away with jumping offside as he was in the neutral zone when the ball was snapped.
  • The fourth down sack on Rodgers should have been negated by a defensive holding flag because Zach Sieler freed up the stunting lineman by grabbing John Simpson.
  • Miami got away with a massive hold on Williams on a wide receiver screen.
  • Adams' sideline catch was reviewed but ultimately confirmed. He definitely had possession and control before both feet touched inbounds.
  • Reed could have been flagged for a late hit as he shoved a ball carrier out of bounds.
  • Malik Washington's diving catch clearly hit the ground and moved slightly but it was upheld, which is usually the case when the receiver's hands don't come off the ball.
  • On the play where Miami were called for an illegal shift, Echols was clearly held by the wide receiver.
  • McDonald was held on the Achane touchdown run. A blocker grabbed him from behind.
  • Rodgers was not over the line of scrimmage when he threw the touchdown pass to Adams. To be an illegal forward pass, his whole body would need to be past the line of scrimmage but he was basically on the line.
  • Smith had another sideline catch which was good, and correctly ruled a catch.
  • It was generous of the officials to not flag Huntley for intentional grounding as he threw it right into the dirt just before Micheal Clemons brought him down for an apparent sack. There was a blocker in the backfield but Huntley literally dirted it a few yards in front of him and the eligible receiver wasn't nearby or even in a position to make a catch.
  • Miami used a timeout to prevent a delay of game call.
  • Emmaunel Ogbah consistently lined up right on the edge of being flagged for a neutral zone infraction.
  • Sieler was held by Bailey on Rodgers' final touchdown pass to Hall, but the officials missed or ignored this.
