After Further Review: Jets-New England
By popular demand, we're again going to have a post after each game that breaks down some of the controversial decisions from the officiating crew in the game.
Penalty Count
Patriots 2-20 (leading to one Jets first down)
Jets 5-53 (leading to three Patriots first downs)
Note: This does not include penalties that are declined or off-set.
Plays where the call was obvious, uncontroversial or not visible on broadcast footage
Jets Penalties
- Jamien Sherwood defensive holding. This wasn't very clear on the broadcast footage but he did have some contact as the tight end came across the middle and it was beyond five yards. This mostly looked like the offensive player initiated contact and they were leaning on one another but there presumably was a grab at some point that was not visible on the broadcast footage.
- Jermaine Johnson roughing the passer. Head contact with his hand as he extended his arm while trying to get to the quarterback. Inadvertent, but clearly flaggable.
- Jordan Clark, taunting after an admittedly nice defensive play on Stefon Diggs. It was 28-3 at the time. Moronic.
- Brady Cook intentional grounding. This was an embarrassing display of Cook's limitations as he was outside the pocket but his throw-away never reached the line of scrimmage. It wasn't so much that he didn't have the arm strength to get it to the line of scrimmage, but that the angle of his throw was so inaccurate that he missed throwing it past the line of scrimmage by several yards. It's possible he expected Breece Hall to be out there, but Hall got caught up in traffic and you'd bank on Cook to have better awareness of where everyone is.
- Joe Tippmann false start on 4th and goal. Clearly went early, as did Armand Membou.
Patriots Penalties
- Illegal man downfield on Morgan Moses. Timing on a screen pass was thrown off by a Jets blitz. Moses was one of multiple players over five yards downfield when the pass was thrown.
Penalties warranting further discussion or explanation
Jets Penalties
- Brandon Stephens pass interference in the end zone. Unless there was a grab earlier on in the play or visible to the official but not on any of the broadcast angles, this looked like a bad call. He did turn to locate the ball without making any contact that would impede the receiver's ability to catch it.
- Qwan'tez Stiggers defensive holding. Stiggers wasn't a fan of this call and you can see why. Hunter Henry initiated the contact and pushed off.
Patriots Penalties
- Roughing the passer to negate a Jeremiah Pharms sack. This was harsh as the contact appeared to be to Cook's shoulder and Pharms didn't land on him with full body weight. You can see why the officials thought there was head contact because of how Cook's head snapped back, but there was none.
Notable no-calls etc
Here were some of the other notable missed calls, replay situations and controversial moments:
- Diggs clearly got both feet down on his contested catch at the sideline.
- Kyle Williams was marked out of bounds short of the first down but this looked to be an obvious first down and the replay booth correctly changed the spot.
- Membou jumped on Christian Barmore at the end of the last play of the first half, after he was knocked to the ground, almost starting a massive fight. Barmore reportedly claimed that this was a dirty hit but it really just looked like your standard over-exuberant and frustrated lineman unnecessarily finishing a play with aggression.
- Cook avoided a sack by tossing the ball at Jeremy Ruckert's lower half as he was on his way down. Ruckert wasn't even looking for the ball, as he was too busy blocking but this is still enough to meet the "receiver in the area" condition so grounding cannot apply.
- Garrett Bradbury had the clearest example of uncalled "assisting the runner" you'll see all season as he grabbed and dragged TreVeyon Henderson forwards to turn a no gain into a five-yard gain. Modern officials allow pushing, but pulling or dragging is definitely still supposed to be called.
- Efton Chism III did managed to keep the ball off the turf on his diving catch.
- Isaiah Williams was clearly short of the marker on fourth down as his knee was down before he reached for the line to gain and the ball probably came up short anyway.
- Hall looked to be short of the marker and was ruled short but replay assist game him the first down.
- Schooler had a big hit on John Metchie III which could have been flagged because Metchie clearly had already stepped out. It was a bit of a bang-bang play, though.
- Kyle Williams was definitely out of bounds on the long Joshua Dobbs pass at the sideline.
- Mike Vrabel wanted a team sack on the play where Cook threw it away as he went out of bounds, but Cook had hopped out before the sideline and released it while he was still in mid-air.
