Camp Recap: Day 22 - 8/19/2018

The Jets were back home for practice this morning. There are just three practices left after today and then they will break camp. Here were some of the main things that happened, as reported by media on site:

  • It was wet and not that many people attended, perhaps due to the rescheduled session;
  • Brian Winters and Kelvin Beachum were in pads but sat out team drills again;
  • Steve McLendon, Trenton Cannon, Parry Nickerson, Kacy Rodgers II, Jonah Trinnaman and Trumaine Johnson worked off to the side with trainers at the start of practice. Johnson was in uniform but did not practice;
  • Isaiah Crowell was wearing a red no-contact jersey for team periods;
  • Josh McCown started off as the first-team quarterback again but both back-ups also got first team reps and Darnold got the most overall reps (also mixing in with the twos and threes);
  • Neal Sterling got off to a good start with a catch over the middle from McCown and a long touchdown from Sam Darnold in team drills, as Derrick Jones slipped in coverage;
  • ArDarius Stewart flashed with a nice catch from McCown with Buster Skrine draped all over him in coverage;
  • Darnold connected with Clive Walford on a deep pass and continued his mastery of the red zone drills, finding Jordan Leggett with a great throw and Andre Roberts with an easier one for touchdowns, then hitting Chris Herndon for another;
  • Leggett made a lunging, juggling catch on a Teddy Bridgewater pass shortly afterwards, but then Sterling followed that with a sliding grab and added a long catch from Bridgewater soon afterwards;
  • Andre Roberts beat Juston Burris and JJ Wilcox for an 80-yard touchdown from Bridgewater;
  • Terrence Brooks broke up a pass and Nathan Shepherd and Dylan Donahue each had a would-be sack in team periods;
  • Darnold got hot towards the end of the session, hitting McBride over the middle and then Kearse, before Robby Anderson pulled in a diving catch downfield despite having slipped on his route. Apparently that last throw got caught up in the wind though;
  • Darnold got the assignment with starters on the final two-minute drill and picked apart the defense impressively. However, the drive stalled in the red zone (which is ironic given how effective Darnold has been in the red zone over the last few weeks);
  • Bridgewater got to work with the second unit on his two-minute drill and was equally impressive, if not moreso, as he moved the team down the field. Leggett's 15-yard touchdown on 3rd-and-10 ended the session; and
  • After practice, Bowles had a longer than usual presser that was loaded with platitudes and cliches, but he was unable to disguise the fact that he was frustrated with Frankie Luvu's penalties in the last game, saying that they were avoidable and that he and Luvu have since had a "major talk".
