Countdown to Camp: 55

As we look ahead to training camp in late July, we're going to take a daily retrospective look back at some random people, moments and games from Jets history...

The Current 55

This is a make or break year for former third round pick Lorenzo Mauldin. After missing last season with a back injury, Mauldin needs to establish himself this season, following an underwhelming start to his career. The good news for him is that there is no obvious starter ahead of him.

The Greatest

Marvin Jones was a former fourth overall pick who played his entire career with the Jets, lasting over a decade. He racked up over a thousand tackles in his career and was named as a first-team all-pro in 2000.

Jones had one sack in the 2001 playoff game against the Raiders:

The other 55's

Bobby Houston, John Ebersole, Alex Gordon...

The 1963 season was the first as the Jets but they won just five games. We detailed that earlier in our countdown, here.

55 yards and into the record books

Before Nick Folk broke it, Mike Nugent had the longest field goal in team history with a 55-yarder in a 2008 blowout over the Rams.

As a bonus, here's Wesley Walker's 55-yard touchdown that sparked the Jets to a 31-28 opening day win over the Bills in 1987:

55 on the scoreboard

The Jets suffered another big loss to the Patriots in 1978, going down 55-21.
