How the hell am I supposed to know who this is? - Stone Smartt

In an occasional feature, we briefly highlight any of the lesser-known players that make an unexpected impact during camp, preseason or the regular season.

Today, we focus on tight end Stone Smartt:

What he did:

With the offense struggling in the green/white scrimmage, Smartt stepped up with the first touchdown in the live scrimmage:

He later added another good one:

Outlook:

Smartt was an under-the-radar signing during the offseason as the Jets made a low-cost pickup of a player who they hope is on the brink of breaking out. However, he's been off to a quiet start as he hasn't received as much attention since Mason Taylor was drafted and then made a strong start.

The 26-year old only has 31 catches in three years but his 16 catches and 208 yards last year set career highs. He only has one touchdown in his career, on a 51-yard catch and run, so it's good to see him getting in the end zone to perhaps showcase an area of untapped potential.

The much-maligned Jeremy Ruckert remains ahead of Smartt on the depth chart, but his inconsistent play so far in his career give Smartt a shot at sharing most of the reps with Taylor if that inconsistency persists.

Whether the Jets keep three tight ends and how Andrew Beck fits into the mix remains to be seen but Smartt definitely seems to have a strong chance of making the roster over the likes of Zack Kuntz and Neal Johnson.
