How the hell am I supposed to know who this is? - Pokey Wilson

In an occasional feature, we briefly highlight any of the lesser-known players that make an unexpected impact during camp, preseason or the regular season.

Today, we focus on wide receiver Pokey Wilson:

What he did:

On a day when the Jets' passing game struggled to get anything going, Wilson stepped up with a big catch from Brady Cook as the team were working on being backed up at their own goal line:

He had been starting to make a few plays here and there, so seems to be building on that with preseason approaching:

Outlook:

Wilson, who most recently spent time catching passes from the likes of Chris "The Strevelation" Streveler up in Canada, probably began camp right near the bottom of the depth chart after having signed a futures deal in February. So far, he hasn't had a chance to get off the third unit.

However, with the passing game stalling as the Jets try to install Tanner Engstrand's new offense, the Jets could be compelled to turn to players further down the depth chart. They need to find out if anyone can provide more of a spark than the veteran trio (Allen Lazard, Tyler Johnson and Josh Reynolds) that seems to be pressing right now.

It would be ironic if the Jets' efforts to find a wide receiver not called Wilson who could contribute in the Jets passing game led to them considering another guy called Wilson for that role.

One step at a time, though. He should get some second half work against backups in preseason and he needs to flash to give himself a shot at sticking around on the practice squad.
