How the hell am I supposed to know who this is? - Andrew Beck
In an occasional feature, we briefly highlight any of the lesser-known players that make an unexpected impact during camp, preseason or the regular season.
Today, we focus on fullback/tight end Andrew Beck:
What he did:
Beck unexpectedly made an instant impact on Saturday night as he was one of the least likely candidates to lead the Jets in receiving but that's exactly what he did:

Not only that, but he also had the second-biggest play of the game, generating some yards after the catch on this 24-yarder.

Outlook:
Beck, a futures signing ahead of the free agency period, isn't going to produce in the passing game every week but what was perhaps more significant than those catches was the fact that the first unit used him a lot and he was clearly part of the gameplan. He wasn't lining up at fullback as much as he was at tight end, though. Most of the time he was in an h-back role with Jeremy Ruckert inline.
The outlook for Beck's roster chances looks good because he's easily their best option at fullback and a competent rotational tight end who can play special teams.
Perhaps more worthy of discussion is where this leaves everyone else in the tight end room. If we say Beck is going to make the 53, then is there room for Ruckert, Mason Taylor and Stone Smartt to all make it?
Ruckert had been having a quiet camp before starting to get going in the second week. However, in the past week he has twice caused an interception with poor hands and in Saturday's game his blocking was poor as he missed a run block, a protection and a return unit block.
Taylor is nursing a high ankle sprain but his draft status makes him a roster lock, while Smartt had two touchdowns in last weekend's scrimmage and one on Saturday so he's competing well. Maybe Ruckert's hold on a roster spot is tenuous in spite of his familiarity with Justin Fields.
As for Beck, he's a good blocker and has sneaky athleticism having famously once scored an NFL touchdown on a kick return. Let's see if he is still in the mix once Taylor is back.
