In-depth analysis: Jets-Packers (Part Two - Defense)
Over the course of today, we'll be breaking down the performance of every player that took the field in the Jets' preseason game against the Packers. We'll continue now with the defense and look at special teams later on.
Defensive Tackles - I don't think you're ready for Tufele
One of the big winners from Saturday night was Jay Tufele, who has been listed on the second unit. With both starters nursing injuries, Tufele started alongside Derrick Nnadi and had a huge game with 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. He also added a pressure and penetrated well on one run play, but did jump offside and got blown off the line once by a double team.
Nnadi has had a quiet camp and this was a quiet game from him although he shed his block nicely to get in on one run stuff. He was handled at the point of attack a couple of times.
Leonard Taylor III made a big impact with the second unit. It was his sack that jarred the ball loose for Tufele's touchdown and he also drew two holding penalties and had a pressure.
Phidarian Mathis joined Taylor on the second unit and also drew a hold and bottled up a run. He had a missed tackle and was driven off the line on a short yardage conversion though.
Undrafted rookies Payton Page and Fatorma Mulbah both saw action, with Page getting into the game earlier and seeing more time. He had one pressure. Mulbah made a nice play on this run stop.

(Quinnen Williams and Byron Cowart did not play).
Defensive Ends - Baron Wasteland
Will McDonald and Micheal Clemons made the start, with Clemons getting into a scuffle that led to offsetting penalties. McDonald was sealed off on one run and called for an illegal hands to the face penalty, but he set up a sack by beating his man on an inside spin move and made a great play against the run.

Rashad Weaver and Eric Watts are among those competing for reps behind McDonald and Clemons. Watts got upfield well on one running play and was in on another run stop but got called for a late hit on the sideline. Weaver was blocked out of one run on the edge but did pressure the quarterback once.
Braiden McGregor was credited with half a sack but it really could have been a full sack credited to Tufele who already had the quarterback wrapped up as McGregor cleaned up. Otherwise, he didn't do much and was kicked out on one running play.
Rookie Tyler Baron was in on a couple of run stops near the line but also had a couple of missed tackles, including one that on a play that ended up being a 39-yard touchdown run.
Michael Fletcher and Kingsley Jonathan saw brief action but neither affected the stat sheet. Fletcher penetrated well to disrupt one run, although he missed the tackle. Jonathan wanted a hold on one play.
(Jermaine Johnson, who is on the PUP list, did not play).
Linebackers - I hope you like Jamin too
Quincy Williams and Jamien Sherwood made the start with Jamin Davis in a 4-3 base formation. Williams and Sherwood weren't in for very long but combined well on one run stop as Williams forced the run out wide although he missed the tackle and Sherwood pursued out to the sideline to clean it up.
It was interesting that Davis started because Marcelino McCrary-Ball had been listed ahead of him on the unofficial depth chart. He showed signs of why with two tackles behind the line, one of which was ruled as a sack after the quarterback pump-faked before taking off on a keeper. He also forced one run back inside and made a good play in coverage to recover to his man in the flat and force the quarterback to look elsewhere.
McCrary-Ball has had a good camp but he annoyed Aaron Glenn with a late hit penalty. His best play saw him disrupt a screen pass.
Rookie Kiko Mauigoa was blocked out of a play at the second level and missed a tackle that led to a tackle for loss for a teammate. He had one tackle.
Zaire Barnes had three tackles, which was actually tied for the team lead with four other players. He drew a hold with a run blitz, was in good position on an incompletion and made an open field tackle in coverage on 3rd-and-long. He did give up a first down in coverage.
UDFA Boog Smith had a welcome to the NFL moment when he was pancaked on the Packers' lone scoring play. He was also sealed inside on an outside run. However, he made a good play near the end of the game with an open field tackle to stop his man in his tracks and force a fourth down.
Jackson Sirmon and Ja'Markis Weston got into the game late and each was in on a tackle.
Cornerbacks - Things that go Bump in the night
Sauce Gardner was a one-man three-and-out on the Packers' first possession as he broke up a pass on first down, made the tackle on a second down run and then broke up another pass on third down. He was called for a pass interference penalty on the next drive but that was a bang-bang play in terms of his timing.
Brandon Stephens did give up a first down on his only target but otherwise was untroubled in his Jets debut.
It's good to see Deuce Carter back healthy. He was targeted on a 3rd down pass to the flat and was potentially in position to make the stop but it would have been a difficult play. That was dropped anyway.
Bump Cooper is only a recent addition but got into the game early and made an impact with two pass breakups and by closing for a tackle on a short pass underneath. He did miss two tackles, though.

Qwan'tez Stiggers was targeted unsuccessfully three times but all three were arguably negative plays for him as one was dropped and two were overthrown with the receiver open each time.
The Jets have been using UDFA Jordan Clark as a nickel back and he was in on the tackle after a short catch.
Mario Goodrich also saw brief action. He was in on one tackle but gave up a first down in coverage.
Isaiah Oliver, who remains listed as a cornerback despite the fact he also plays safety, had one tackle and a good aggressive play to blow up a blocker on an outside run.
(Kris Boyd, Azareye'h Thomas and Jarrick Bernard-Converse did not play)
Safeties - Need to see Moore
Andre Cisco and Tony Adams made the start at safety. Adams had two tackles and Cisco was in position to make the hit on an overthrown pass down the middle.
Malachi Moore and Jarius Monroe also got plenty of work, but with mixed results. Moore was called for illegal contact and blocked out of a play at the second level but did draw a hold. Monroe overpursued badly on the Packers' touchdown and gave up a couple of first downs. However, he had a nice hit and was in coverage on two incompletions.
Tanner McCalister saw brief action and was in on a run stop, but UDFA Dean Clark marked his debut with the key missed tackle on Green Bay's lone touchdown.
We'll be back with more on the special teams later...
