In-Depth Analysis: Special Teams (Week 7 - Miami)

Special teams were a bit of a letdown this week, but there were no major breakdowns.

Kicking game - Got it on Lac

You've got to give Lachlan Edwards credit. After an awful rookie season, he's been extremely consistent and reliable so far this year. One of his punts was downed at the five by Juston Burris and he had another long one and one that was almost muffed.

Chandler Catanzaro nailed four extra points and had a couple of touchbacks, but you have to wonder if his ability to kick 60-yard field goals played into the Jets' thinking when they tried to advance the ball at the end of the game and ended up setting up the game-winning score with a turnover.

Return game - Jets can't get a Stew going

ArDarius Stewart continues to struggle badly on kickoffs. So much so, that it's possible teams are laying the ball up short for him to field. He was stuffed at the 20 and at the 16 on two returns and decided at the last minute not to run one out after a hesitant catch. The second one was arguably important because it left the Jets needing 40 yards in 17 seconds to get into range for a potential tying field goal instead of 30 yards in 22 seconds if he left it to fall in the end zone and downed it for a touchback.

The blocking wasn't very good out in front, as Julian Stanford got blown up on the first kickoff.

On punts, Jeremy Kerley didn't have a very good day either. He had one 10-yard return and then went out of bounds right before the Jets took a knee to go in at the half. Otherwise he muffed one and recovered it himself and got stuffed immediately on another.

Again, the blocking wasn't great. Terrence Brooks, Xavier Coleman and Darryl Roberts all got beaten while playing the vice.

Kick coverage - I can go for Miles and Miles

Rontez Miles continued his outstanding play with two good open field tackles in coverage. Miles is 5th in the NFL with five solo special teams tackles, just three behind the leader. Not bad, especially considering he missed the first three games.

Stanford and Josh Martin were also credited with tackles. Brooks wasn't credited with one but beat his man from the gunner position and seemed to get enough of the return man on the sideline to cause him to slip and fall out of bounds.

Burris also had some good gunner work, but he, Martin, Brooks and Thomas Hennessy all had missed tackles.
