In-Depth Analysis: Special Teams (Week Six - New England)

Special teams this week didn't play much of a role, but again there were no serious breakdowns or anything.

Kicking game - Lac around the clock

Chandler Catanzaro didn't feature much this week, making a chip shot field goal and two extra points. Three of his four kick-offs were touchbacks.

Punter Lachlan Edwards continues to be much better than last year, although he got a bit of a lucky bounce on a short punt from his own end zone. He had one excellent punt that bounced inside the five and had good hangtime on another, but his last punt was returned 14 yards.

Return game - Must try ArDar

The return game got off to a bad start this week as ArDarius Stewart was stuffed near the 10-yard line. Later in the game, it happened again on a play where Travaris Cadet was gesturing to him to stay in the end zone and then ended up getting in his way. They had words after that play.

Stewart did have one return out past the 25 but his shaky decision making almost seemed like he was paying tribute to the departed Jalin Marshall. Stewart has been unconvincing in this role so far.

Brent Qvale did a good job as a blocker, but Xavier Coleman had a couple of breakdowns in his first NFL game. He got burned once by the gunner who blew up a punt return and then had a blatant illegal block in the back.

That play once again came about because Jeremy Kerley tried to go East-West on a punt return and lost ground. Had he taken the punt and just run forward for the easy 6-7 yards, the Jets would have started their final drive needing to go just 55 yards to tie the score. After that penalty, they had to go 73.

Kick coverage - Thomas the Tank Engine

Probably the best play in coverage all day saw Lawrence Thomas run down the middle to blow up a kick-off. Jordan Jenkins cleaned up on that play, with Julian Stanford also getting in on the tackle.

Stanford and Rontez Miles were each credited with two special teams tackles, with Stanford also cleaning up after Terrence Brooks got down there fast as the gunner but missed the tackle.

Miles' two tackles were a good play as the return man fielded a bouncing punt and an open field tackle after Amendola's 14-yard return.
