In-depth analysis: Bollinger Bowl XVII (Part Three - Special Teams)
Over the course of today, we'll be breaking down the performance of every player that took the field in the Jets' preseason game against the Eagles. We'll wrap up now with a look at the special teams units.
Kicking - Harrison Flawed
As the game reached its climax, it looked like Harrison Mevis was going to get a chance to kick a game-winner. Unfortunately, that never happened and his only attempt was a 55-yarder that wasn't close.
Mevis had one short kickoff, one touchback and one that was returned from the two-yard line. He'll have to see if the Jets retain him on the practice squad or another team comes calling.
Nick Folk's only action this week was to successfully kick a 41-yard field goal.
Punter Austin McNamara has had a nice preseason, leading the NFL in net yardage, so he could be a nice find. Although he had one touchback, it was still a solid game from McNamara, who punted five times with a gross average of over 49 yards and just seven return yards.
Mario Goodrich had a pressure on one of the Eagles' kicks.
Kick Coverage - Miller Time
The Jets continue to use a variety of players in the primary gunner role, all of whom have contributed in some way.
Ja'Markis Weston, Dymere Miller and Quentin Skinner each had one play where they got downfield well to force a fair catch.
The best play in punt coverage, though, was from Malachi Moore, who lined up in punt protection and ran down the middle to hit the return man right as he caught the ball.
Jordan Clark almost got to the McNamara punt that landed in the end zone but came up just short.
The Jets also covered both kickoff returns well, stopping them at about the 25. Arian Smith got to the return man first on one of them and although he didn't make the tackle, he slowed him up for Jarius Monroe to clean up. The other one saw Jackson Sirmon fight off a block to make a nice play.
Return Game - The Pritching Hour
Jamaal Pritchett once again handled punt return duties with Xavier Gipson sitting out with a shoulder issue and made a horrible start as he muffed his first return and was lucky he could fall on the loose ball.
However, he bounced back really well with 41 and 22 yard returns on his other two runbacks as every other Eagles punt was out of bounds or a touchback.
On the muff, both Clark and Goodrich were beaten by the gunner. Goodrich did a good job of forcing the gunner out of bounds on one that ended up as a touchback though.
Sirmon made a terrific block and Pritchett showed good vision to go down the sideline on his longer return. The other one saw Pritchett field a bouncing ball and he might have been lucky not to have been flagged for a false fair catch signal.
The Jets held a kind of open audition for the kickoff return job, which seems likely to belong to Kene Nwangwu once the season starts. Miller, Malachi Corley, Lawrance Toafili and Donovan Edwards all got chances but nobody had a long return and the blocking and vision both seemed pretty poor.
Corley's first return was blown up on a terrific play by an Eagles player who drove Monroe off his spot and shed the block to make the tackle.
Stone Smartt got beaten by his man and called for holding on one return to put the Jets back inside their 20-yard line.
Others guilty of missed blocks included Zack Kuntz, Braiden McGregor and Neal Johnson.
