Jets 2021 Green/White Scrimmage Recap

The Jets were on the field for their annual Green/White Scrimmage on Saturday evening at Metlife Stadium with media on hand and fans in attendance.

Here's what went down, based on media reports and tweets from those in attendance:

  • The following players were not in uniform: Quinnen Williams, Ashtyn Davis, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Isaiah Dunn, Chuma Edoga, Del'Shawn Phillips, Vinny Curry, Daniel Brown, Kyle Phillips and Jabari Zuniga. Dunn has a leg injury and Brown pulled his hamstring;
  • John Franklin-Myers did practice despite having left the most recent practice due to a shoulder injury;
  • George Fant, who was just activated from the Covid-19 reserve list, practiced for the first time, as did new signing Edmond Robinson. Fant split first team reps with Morgan Moses;
  • The defensive backs dominated in one-on-ones before Corey Davis finally got open for a catch against Lamar Jackson;
  • Hamilcar Rashed did a good job in lineman 1-on-1's;
  • Dan Feeney was working as the first team left guard but Denzel Mims once again started off with the third unit;
  • In team drills, Ty Johnson had a nice run and Zach Wilson hit Ryan Griffin on a play action rollout on his first series;
  • Mike White fumbled a handoff for the second practice in a row;
  • Blake Cashman returned a fumble for a touchdown after Elijah Campbell forced it;
  • Camilo Eifler made a stop against the run and followed it up with a good play in coverage;
  • As the scrimmage itself got underway, Josh Malone was the first guy back to return kickoffs;
  • The team period started with a Carl Lawson run stuff and a CJ Mosley pass breakup;
  • Wilson hit on short passes to Ty Johnson and Tyler Kroft but the drive ended in a punt;
  • Ace Carter was the first guy back to return punts;
  • White's first series was a three and out with Bryce Huff disruptive as a pass rusher;
  • Elijah Moore was the punt returner for the other team;
  • Wilson's second series was another three and out as he was under plenty of pressure. On one play, Jarrad Davis beat Feeney for a pressure and Wilson's rushed throw was behind Corey Davis, who dropped it. Carter muffed the ensuing punt out of bounds;
  • White's next series was another three-and-out with Hamsah Nasirildeen making a nice play in coverage;
  • Wilson threw a nice downfield pass that Trevon Wesco dropped;
  • Corey Davis picked up eight on a short pass with a good open field move to juke Mosley but the Jets had to punt for a fifth straight time after Maye made a play in coverage on a play that Kroft perhaps should have caught. Tanzel Smart and Nathan Shepherd contributed some pressure on the series;
  • James Morgan got a chance next with Carter running for a first down and then Crowder catching a first down pass on his drive;
  • The second half of the scrimmage began with a good kickoff return by Corey Ballentine;
  • Wilson's first drive of the second half was another three and out, not helped by a false start on 2nd-and-7;
  • Berrios got some punt return work in the second half;
  • Morgan, working against the third string defense, badly missed an open Berrios but bounced back with consecutive downfield completions to Manasseh Bailey;
  • He completed the drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Carter who caught the ball in the flat and dived in at the pylon;
  • Chris Naggar made the extra point;
  • Ballentine had another good kick return;
  • Wilson's next drive saw him sacked by Franklin-Myers, who beat Fant, and then intercepted by Javelin Guidry on the next snap;
  • After a reset the offense got back-to-back first downs on a Tevin Coleman run and a Wilson completion to Jeff Smith, who caught the ball in front of Maye and held on despite a bit hit;
  • Wilson then hit Moore in a tight window over the middle on third down to keep the drive going;
  • After Johnson was stopped on 3rd-and-short, the offense went for it and Perine got the conversion to move into the red zone;
  • Lamarcus Joyner almost picked Wilson, who then threw incomplete on third down;
  • Matt Ammendola settled for a field goal;
  • Carter had a nice return on the ensuing kickoff;
  • White was up next and hit on consecutive passes to Berrios, including one on a diving catch;
  • He completed the drive by lofting an 8-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Yeboah with Naggar making the extra point;
  • The scrimmage wrapped up with a two minute drill session;
  • After miscommunication between Wilson and Davis on first down, he went to him again for a contested first down catch in front of Bryce Hall;
  • Wilson then hit Moore who beat Bless Austin and turned it upfield for extra yardage;
  • The drive stalled as Lawson drew a holding penalty from Mekhi Becton and then got good pressure on a third down incompletion;
  • On fourth down, Mosley intercepted Wilson off the deflection as Joyner broke up a pass;
  • White's two minute drill saw him hit Carter on a short pass but then he missed an open Malone downfield;
  • Berrios made a spectacular catch but was ruled out of bounds;
  • UDFA offensive lineman Teton Saltes was injured late in the practice and limped off the field;
  • Mims flashed late with a spectacular leaping grab;
  • White completed the drive with a 13-yard touchdown throw to Malone in the corner of the end zone;
  • Ammendola shanked the extra point;
  • Wilson came out to kneel in the victory formation to end practice (despite the fact the final score was Starting Offense 3 Backups 20); and
  • Naggar had choked badly in the kicking gauntlet, missing three of four, while Ammendola made all four.

Tomorrow is a day off and then the team will be back on the practice field on Monday. Check back here then for more coverage.
