Jets Practice Recap - Joint Practice #2 with the Eagles

The Jets were on the practice field on Wednesday for the second of two scheduled joint practices with Friday night's preseason opponent, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Here's what else went down during practice, based on media reports and tweets from those in attendance:

  • Mekhi Becton, Denzel Mims and Lamarcus Joyner were not at practice;
  • Greg Van Roten also did not practice;
  • Brandin Echols was back in practice despite getting hurt at the end of yesterday's session and Sheldon Rankins also returned;
  • In 1-on-1 coverage drills Echols was embarrassed by Devonta Smith, but Jamison Crowder had a leaping grab and Braxton Berrios caught a couple of passes;
  • In 1-on-1 pass rush drills, Jermeiah Valoaga bowled over Andre Dillard, apparently for the second straight day and John Franklin-Myers got into a fight with an Eagles player;
  • In 11-on-11, Jamien Sherwood blew up a screen;
  • The offense ran a screen to Crowder for a good gain but then the Eagles stuffed two runs and Fletcher Cox burst into the backfield to sack Zach Wilson;
  • With Becton and Van Roten out and Alijah Vera-Tucker getting a limited workload as he works his way back, George Fant, Jimmy Murray and Dan Feeney all got first team reps. Murray got hurt later on and was carted off;
  • The protection held up well on Wilson completions to Keelan Cole and Jeff Smith and the line blocked well on a good Tevin Coleman gain;
  • Wilson was nearly picked on a throw over the middle to Tyler Kroft and had a downfield pass to Corey Davis broken up;
  • The Eagles scored three touchdowns in four passes during red zone work;
  • On the next set, Quinnen Williams broke through the line for a sack, but the Eagles threw a couple more touchdowns including one on a shovel pass;
  • Ace Carter rushed for a touchdown in red zone drills but the pocket collapsed for another sack on the next play as Morgan Moses was beaten;
  • There was a skirmish between the Jets defense and Eagles offense;
  • In special teams drills the Jets allowed the Eagles to break through for a would-be punt block;
  • Hamsah Nasirildeen stuffed a goal line run with a big hit, but the Jets offense also got stuffed a few times on a goal line drill;
  • Josh Adams finally got into the end zone on a goal line drill;
  • Sherwood and Foley Fatukasi generated some pressure on the Eagles' next series;
  • Rankins and Williams got some good penetration as the Jets defensive line began to dominate in goal line drills, stuffing three runs in a row;
  • In red zone work, Wilson connected with Berrios on a screen for a score and then threw touchdowns to Elijah Moore and Jeff Smith;
  • The Eagles attempted to drive for a score from the 30 with 45 seconds on the clock but a Rankins sack negated a touchdown pass. However, the Eagles converted on a blown coverage on 4th-and-5 and then scored from the 10, adding the two-point conversion with Blessuan Austin in coverage on both plays;
  • The Jets' own attempt to drive from the 30 began well with a Crowder first down but then Davis had a drop and Wilson was sacked to end the threat with Fant beaten;
  • The Eagles' backups also scored a touchdown on their drive on a 20-yard pass from ex-Jet Joe Flacco over Nasirildeen; and
  • The Jets backups tried to drive but this went nowhere and ended when James Morgan was sacked.

There is a day off tomorrow after which the teams will face each other in the final preseason game on Friday evening.
