Previewing the opposition: Miami Dolphins

We've already broken down the Dolphins' roster once this year, but this can now be updated based on how everyone is playing so far and who is available for tomorrow's game. There should be several changes, primarily on defense.

When the teams met earlier in the season, the Jets' offensive line was overwhelmed but the defensive line had their most productive game of the season and there were monster games on defense from Demario Davis and Terrence Brooks. Josh McCown and Robby Anderson added big games on offense.

Let's review how Miami's roster shapes up:

Quarterbacks

Jay Cutler has managed to steer the Dolphins to a 3-2 record but he's not playing particularly well. He averages just 5.2 yards per attempt and his season high is just 230 passing yards, which he achieved in Miami's first game.

Matt Moore remains the back-up but has yet to play so far this season.

Offensive line

Mike Pouncey has been the key player on Miami's line for some time but his status was in doubt after he suffered a concussion last week. It looks like he will play, but - interestingly - the team actually made its comeback last week with inexperienced reserve Jake Brendal deputizing for him.

Miami has given up 10 sacks in five games but plenty of pressure, with left tackle Laremy Tunsil and right guard Jermon Bushrod each giving up multiple pressures per game.

Anthony Steen has shown some development as a run blocker while playing alongside Tunsil but has struggled in pass protection.

Right tackle Ja'Wuan James rounds out this group and has been the team's most consistent pass protector.

In addition to Brendal, former Jet Jesse Davis and rookie Isaac Asiata offer cover from the bench.

Running Backs

Last year, Jay Ajayi's numbers were definitely better when the line was at full strength, so whether or not Pouncey plays could make a big difference. However, he broke out last week with a 130-yard game even though Pouncey missed half of it. That ended a three-game stretch where he had averaged just 2.9 yards per carry.

Ajayi dropped two passes last week and has just 23 receiving yards on the season.

Back-ups Damien Williams and Keynan Drake have combined for just 90 yards and no touchdowns on 17 carries and eight catches.

Receivers

Jarvis Landry once again leads the Dolphins in receiving and is on target for more than 100 catches again this year, but he's averaging a career low 7.2 yards per catch and has zero 20-yard plays.

Kenny Stills has also seen his yards per catch average drop significantly, from over 17 last year to less than 12 in 2017. He also leads the team with four offensive penalties.

DeVante Parker was off to a decent start but he is likely to miss tomorrow's game due to a problematic ankle.

Reserves Leonte Carroo and Jakeem Grant haven't been playing much but might need to step up if Parker is out.

Expect the Dolphins to play with two tight ends a lot if Parker is out. Julius Thomas has 12 catches on the year for just 108 yards while Anthony Fasano has zero catches. In fact, the only time he was targeted was an interception.

Defensive line

Miami's defensive line remains its biggest strength. Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake both had excellent games against the Jets in the previous meeting, despite the fact Miami's line was not at full strength due to starter Jordan Phillips being out. He's now back in the line-up.

Andre Branch is the other starter at defensive end, but William Hayes and rookie Charles Harris are also seeing time. Hayes has done a great job against the run.

Rookie Vincent Taylor has been producing well off the bench on the inside, but the Jets exploited Davon Godchaux in the last meeting by getting him to jump offside twice. He leads the team with seven penalties.

Linebackers

Veterans Lawrence Timmons and Rey Maualuga both missed the game in the loss to the Jets, but are now back in the line-up, relegating the inexperienced Mike Hill and Chase Allen to special teams duties.

Kiko Alonso completes the starting group. He is tied for the team lead in tackles and leads the team in defensive snaps.

Defensive backs

Xavien Howard is the only Dolphins cornerback to have started every game, but they should get Byron Maxwell back this week after a few games out. Howard is a physical player but has struggled with a quarterback rating of over 100 when targeted and five penalties.

Rookie Cordrea Tankersley had been starting in place of Maxwell and holding up well. Maybe he deserves to retain that spot.

Bobby McCain has been mainly employed as the slot corner in subpackages, but veteran Alterraun Verner has barely played.

Reshad Jones and Nate Allen is an experienced safety duo, but Jones is easily the better player of the two. Michael Thomas is the third safety.

Special teams

Placekicker Cody Parkey is still a perfect 7-for-7 on the year and is yet to miss a kick from beyond 50 yards in his career. New punter Matt Haack has posted unspectacular numbers so far.

Grant has been the primary return man, although Drake and Landry have also seen action on kick-offs and punts respectively. Drake had the game-winning touchdown on a return against the Jets last year but nobody has done much in the first five games.

Thomas and reserve running back Senorise Perry have been their most productive players in kick coverage.
