Roster News: Jets place franchise tag on safety Marcus Maye

With the deadline coming up tomorrow and no reports of a long term deal, this was inevitable:

Maye could still get the long-term deal which Joe Douglas recently said the Jets hope to give him. Last week, Maye's agent expressed frustration that the team had yet to take care of this.

In the absence of a long-term deal, Maye will be under contract for the 2021 season for around $11 million.

Trading Maye to another team or - unless he's been given an "exclusive" franchise tag - having another team sign him to an offer sheet whereby the Jets would get a chance to match are also theoretical possibilities now that he's been tagged. The latter seems unlikely because the acquiring team would have to give up two first round picks if the Jets did not match the offer sheet.
