Roster News: Jets release White and Hairston and add four to active roster

Here's an interesting series of moves ahead of tonight's game:

The Jets' gunners were poor on Sunday with Ashtyn Davis out, so Guidry, Smith and Jackson could be candidates to be used in that role. Guidry had been protected for the past few weeks but he and Jackson will each make their NFL debut tonight if active.

Cager showed promise last week, but he'll revert to the practice squad after the game and will no longer be eligible to be elevated from the practice squad over the rest of the season.

Joe Flacco is reportedly going to back up Sam Darnold tonight, so White is surplus to requirements. He may be signed to the practice squad again once he clears waivers.

Hairston wasn't a great fit for the Jets' system and has been poor on special teams, but under the current rules, it's not impossible he'll end up back on the practice squad too. He's still only in his fourth year so he does not qualify for termination pay and the Jets could make a small cash saving by rostering the younger players instead.

These moves could be a sign that the Jets will be cautious with players like Jamison Crowder and Chris Hogan, who were listed as questionable. Apparently, they are already intending to err on the side of caution by making Mekhi Becton active, but leaving him on the bench for emergencies.
