Roster News: Jets sign Fornadel, cut Hartwig

The Jets opened today with a roster move:

Hartwig was hurt in practice the other day, so was probably waived/injured and may revert to injured reserve. Fornadel plugs the gap in terms of interior line depth.

The 26-year old was undrafted out of JMU in 2022 and spent time in Canada and the XFL/UFL before earning his first NFL contract with New England last year. He spent camp and preseason with them and then spent most of the year on the practice squad. Fornadel made the all-XFL team in 2023.

With Joe Tippmann and Josh Myers unlikely to play during preseason, the Jets need people who can snap the ball and Fornadel did play some center in preseason last year, albeit that he played most of his reps at guard and was mostly a tackle in college and a guard in the UFL. Xavier Newman and Kohl Levao could also fill this role.

The Jets have an open roster spot right now because this also happened since yesterday's practice:

Evans was an obvious long-shot to make the team in a position group with plenty of other options.
