Roster News: Jets to sign WR Smith off Houston's practice squad

With Jamison Crowder forced to play out of position on the outside on Sunday, the Jets have made a move to bolster their wide receiver depth:

Smith, who was linked to the Jets back when he was a draft prospect, has a nice combination of size and athleticism and could be a candidate to be mentored by Demaryius Thomas, who was also his teammate in Houston.

As an undrafted rookie last year, he played in seven games, starting one. He caught five passes for 91 yards and a touchdown. In preseason, Smith had a 31-yard touchdown but only one other catch despite being targeted 12 times as he failed to make the Texans' roster.

He saw some action as a kickoff returner in preseason, which could be somewhere he can contribute with Trenton Cannon having left yesterday's game early. He can also potentially play the gunner position in punt coverage.

Smith will, by rule, have to remain on the Jets' active roster for at least three weeks.
