• This was the first of two joint practices with the Bucs;
• The Jets activated Joseph Ossai from the PUP list but he will not practice this week;
• Qwan'tez Stiggers left the field in an ambulance after passing out on the sideline near the end of practice. He is expected to be fine;
• There were multiple fights during the practice, including one between David Bailey and Bucs tackle Luke Goedeke;
• Geno Smith was 10-for-16 with two touchdowns and two interceptions;
• One of the touchdowns came on a deflected pass to Garrett Wilson, who broke several tackles to score;
• A third interception in 7-on-7 strictly speaking doesn't count because there was defensive holding away from the ball;
• Mason Taylor caught Smith's other touchdown pass in the red zone period;
• Bailey had a strong practice with plenty of pressure and at least one sack;
• Braiden McGregor limped off during practice;
• The Bucs offense had good success running the ball, but Jarius Monroe did intercept a pass;
• Jowon Briggs had a solid game against the run and Dane Belton had good plays back to back on a pass breakup and tackle for loss;
• Brandon Stephens, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Jarvis Brownlee, Jaden Keller and Jamien Sherwood also made good defensive plays;
• Andre Cisco got beaten for a touchdown in red zone;
• Wilson and Isaiah Williams each had a deep downfield catch and Omar Cooper made a couple of good catches. AD Mitchell also got open twice but Smith missed him each time; and
• Cade Klubnik had a decent day, especially in 7-on-7's where he opened up 5-for-5.

Today, we focus on safety Dane Belton:

What he did:

Belton seems to have been making a ton of plays in camp: Sacks, tackles for loss, interceptions etc. While much of this damage has been done on the second unit, he has also been getting work with the ones.

Can he make a push to be the other starting safety along with Minkah Fitzpatrick?

Outlook:

Assuming Fitzpatrick is locked into one of those starting safety spots, Belton's competition comprises Andre Cisco, who started the first half of last year before missing the rest of the season due to injuries and Malachi Moore, who started 14 games as a rookie, mostly due to Cisco being unavailable.

While Belton has never won a full-time starter role before, he played a significant role with the Giants over the past four years, including last season when he had 120 tackles and three forced fumbles despite only starting nine games.

He's on a reasonable one-year deal but if he could make the job his, Belton has a good chance to stick around for longer - and for more money. His tackle efficiency is among the highest in the league for safeties over the past few years and head coach Aaron Glenn has has praised his ballhawking abilities (four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and six interceptions in his career despite starting only 22 games).

Let's not forget that Fitzpatrick will also cover the slot at times, so we may see situations where three or even four safeties are in the game together. With Belton's special teams abilities, that makes it more or less certain he will have a significant role to play even if he doesn't beat out Moore and Cisco.

What he did:

Woods has been consistently producing and has seen more work than expected with the first unit. He's apparently impressed at least one key teammate:

Outlook:

Woods is probably fourth on the depth chart (and might even be fifth if Andrew Beck is to be considered part of the tight end group), but he seems to be earning opportunities on merit having spent most of last season inactive. Woods was a waiver claim right before the season but only played in four games last season.

Prior to that, he had a decent rookie season back in 2022 and then missed two straight seasons with injuries, so 2026 could be his first chance since his rookie season to prepare for and play in a full season. He impressed with his size and blocking at the end of last year, but is there room for him on the roster?

With Kenyon Sadiq injured and Mason Taylor having dropped some passes, Woods can present himself as a viable alternative to Jeremy Ruckert for key reps at the tight end position. Will the Jets carry all four (potentially along with Beck) during the regular season, though?

• Fans were in the house for a much longer practice that incorporated live scrimmages;
• Defensive end Kingsley Jonathan left the field with an injury and safety VJ Payne will reportedly miss 3-4 weeks with a bone bruise;
• The first team offense opened with a successful 65-yard drive that ended on a 36-yard Isaiah Williams touchdown catch, although it was a deflected pass under heavy pressure from David Bailey;
• Max Mitchell did a solid job against Bailey on the second unit;
• Cade Klubnik's first drive saw Jordan Clark deflect a pass that was intercepted by Dane Belton who also had a tackle for loss;
• The starting offense was moving again on their second drive as Geno Smith improved to 5-for-5 on the day, but an Azareye'h Thomas horse collar tackle started a scuffle which saw both teams removed from the field;
• Bailey Zappe led a touchdown drive which ended on a 42-yard touchdown pass to either Quincy Skinner or DT Sheffield;
• The next drive for the starters was a three-and-out as they had a delay of game and three incompletions, including a Garrett Wilson drop;
• The ensuing series saw Braelon Allen get down to the five yard line on a long catch and run, but Breece Hall's touchdown run was negated by a hold and the drive stalled;
• Xavier Newman snapped one over Klubnik's head and then Bailey had a run stop but the backups rebounded to drive 50 yards for a score which came as Jamaal Pritchett beat Belton for a 14-yard catch;
• The defense started to take over, holding the starters to three more three-and-outs. Bailey and Darrell Jackson had sacks;
• The next starters' series was another poor one, with three runs and two false starts;
• Their final drive was a little better with short completions to Wilson twice and Mason Taylor, but stalled at the 42;
• Bailey tweaked his ankle near the end of practice but it is not considered serious; and
• Klubnik's final drive of the day ended when he hit Jelani Woods for an 11-yard touchdown on a back shoulder throw. Williams set it up with a 66-yard catch and run.

• Tyler Baron was added to the injured list and Demario Davis, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Harrison Phillips all had a rest day on a day when the Jets had a short practice without pads;
• Geno Smith had a solid day as he went 8-for-12 with five of those to Garrett Wilson. One came on a throw down the middle and another was a leaping catch going against Azareye'h Thomas;
• Dane Belton had an impressive pass breakup downfield on Omar Cooper, who also had a tough drop. Qwan'tez Stiggers, Tre Brown and Samuel Womack also each broke up a pass;
• Cade Klubnik went 6-for 10 and was lucky not to be intercepted on two occasions;

• There were a lot of pre-snap penalties on the offense, which was sloppy at times;

The #Jets claimed DT Junior Tafuna, whom the #Texans cut yesterday.

They are waiving DT Patrick Jenkins in a corresponding move, per sources.

Tafuna was a player we highlighted during last year's pre draft process as he's an athletic 300+ pound space stuffer.

Jenkins lasted just 24 hours before the Jets replaced him with a guy they must prefer.

• Isaiah Davis will be out for a few weeks with a knee injury while Kingsley Enagbare and Nahshon Wright have minor issues that shouldn't keep them out long;
• David Bailey had a mixed day as he beat Olu Fashanu for a sack and had some pressure but was exploited in the run game as Breece Hall and Braelon Allen had big plays running at him;
• Geno Smith had a strong day with standout touchdown throws to Garrett Wilson and AD Mitchell;
• Cade Klubnik struggled but did throw a touchdown to Isaiah Williams in 7's. Mykal Walker intercepted his first pass of the day;
• Omar Cooper had a TD in 7 on 7 action but then had a bad drop;
• Arian Smith made tough catches on back to back plays;
• Jarvis Brownlee dropped an interception and then later combined with Andre Cisco for a downfield breakup;
• AZ Thomas made a good play on Wilson and had a good tackle in the red zone but the first team offense had a lot of success down there;
• Brady Cook had a TD pass to Chase Curtis in traffic:
• Marcelino Mccrary-Ball had some good hits in 7's;
• Malachi Moore, Jarius Monroe and Samuel Womack made plays near the line of scrimmage; and
• Cade York missed two of his seven field goal attempts but Jason Sanders missed four of eight, including three in a row from 47, 51 and 53.

We've signed TE Connor Hulstein and DL Patrick Jenkins. We've also waived S Keidron Smith and waived/injured DL Eric Watts

Hulstein transferred from Princeton to Marist last season and had 599 yards and seven touchdowns on 42 catches to earn FCS all-American second team recognition. He caught just 11 passes in two seasons at Princeton, scoring three touchdowns and adding a blocked punt.

Jenkins, who is 287 pounds and went undrafted out of Tulane last year, spent time with Atlanta and Arizona last season and then played in the UFL this season. He had six tackles and half a sack in preseason with the Cardinals and 22 tackles, six tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks with the UFL's Columbus Aviators.

He was a two-time first team all-AAC selection in college, and a second-teamer once. He had 13 sacks and 27 tackles for loss in three seasons at the college level. He posted 30 bench press reps at his pro day.

Smith, who saw action at the end of last season, was always a long-shot to make the 53 and Watts, who is hurt anyway, was also probably going to be on the practice squad at best.
