It looks like Hall and Parham have avoided serious injury but look set to miss a game or two at least. Injured reserve cannot necessarily be ruled out because week-to-week was how Omar Cooper was listed before he was placed on injured reserve too.

Fitzpatrick's return is a boost, with Aaron Glenn saying he has a good chance to play. Nwangwu coming back would also be useful. If he can't, then Hall's absence will mean the Jets only have Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis (who hasn't played on offense yet this year) at the running back positions, so it would force them to acquire or elevate someone.

New York are also making a couple of roster moves, signing Kohl Levao to the active roster (presumably to fill in while Dylan Parham is out) and re-signing Jordan Clark and Blake Grupe to the practice squad.

InGeno-ious

Geno Smith obviously put up some terrific numbers in Sunday's game and the film backs up the fact that this was an excellent performance, and a very different Geno than the one Jets fans had become accustomed to a decade ago.

While it's fair to note that his receivers helped him out by making several spectacular catches, his numbers were still pretty good even if most of those hadn't been made. And you can't say he didn't do a good job of putting it into places where his receivers could go and make a play on the ball.

Even when the Jets were off to a relatively slow start in the first half, at the end of which they trailed 10-7, Smith had still been playing efficiently as he completed 14 of his first 16 passes. However, what set this performance apart was the success he had when airing it out.

On six passes of over 20 yards downfield, Smith completed five for almost 150 yards with four of them being tremendous throws and, while the other was to a wide open receiver, he still deserves credit for avoiding considerable pressure and hitting him in stride on that one.

The accuracy on this throw, for example, is terrific:

Smith had this success despite considerable pressure from the Lions. You need impressive arm strength to get a throw like this off when you can't step up because you're in the process of being Dragonscrew Legwhipped.

Had there not been a flag on this play, maybe the Lions could have challenged whether Garrett Wilson had established possession before the ball was knocked away but the flag made this a moot point. Once again, Breece Hall's contribution in pass protection didn't exactly cover him in glory, though.

Smith also had a decisive first down run, although that should have been two because he slid down a yard short of the marker in the first quarter. The other negative was that he lost the fumble at the end of the game, but overall the performance stands up to scrutiny.

Can he maintain this level of play even with the Jets down a few bodies? Furthermore can he raise it once the Jets have a full compliment of weapons again?

For now, it's just encouraging to see some good play from the quarterback position. Let's see if this starts to translate to wins.

Garrett Top

Wilson's performance was spectacular as he had 107 yards on 10 catches (on 13 targets). There wasn't much cheap yardage in there, either, as he only had 16 yards after the catch.

Although the aforementioned diving catch above could perhaps be called into question, his full-extension diving fingertip catch in the fourth quarter was sensational (although none of the all-22 footage does it justice).

However, that arguably still wasn't his best catch. The fourth quarter touchdown - again while being interfered with - was incredible. Also - an underrated part of this play - what a route!

Wilson's longest catch came as Smith uncorked this throw down the middle and Wilson went up to get it even though it was slightly behind him and well over his head. Smith displays elite pocket sense and footwork to get this throw off cleanly too.

This isn't the first performance Wilson has had like this, and won't be the last, but the Jets are 0-5 since 2023 when he goes over 100, so he must be yearning for a time when the rest of his team is good enough that an elite performance like this gets them a big win instead of just bravely falling heroically short.

Apparently, they're not quite there yet.

Meredith'rent Strokes

Dylan Parham's injury puts the spotlight on the recent trade for Jordan Meredith, who saw his first offensive action in his third game as a Jet.

The offense functioned pretty well with Meredith in there, driving for two touchdowns and getting down to the 23 on the final drive before Smith's fumble. However, he had some negatives including five pressures allowed in just 22 pass block snaps.

Three of those five came in stunt or blitz pickup situations rather than when blocking one-on-one, but he was bull rushed into Smith's lap once and got beaten fairly clean on this play, which gives us another excuse to admire Smith's elite pocket movement.

The results weren't much better on running plays with Meredith in. He made his block well a couple of times, including on a seven-yard run by Braelon Allen, and didn't make any other glaring mistakes. However, the other five running plays apart from that seven-yarder netted just one yard.

Perhaps his best highlight was something you like to see - a nice pancake on his second snap as he aggressively went looking for work.

It seems likely Meredith will be in the line-up for a while, pending an update on Parham's status. Hopefully he will play more like he did as a guard in 2024 than he did at center last season.

We knew that the kicker move was coming because Sanders is clearly the number one choice right now but is no longer eligible to be elevated from the practice squad. Grupe will presumably be signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

The fact that they signed two interior linemen may not bode well for Dylan Parham, who left Sunday's game with a knee injury and was replaced at left guard by Jordan Meredith.

Dawkins is an undrafted rookie, whereas Morrissey is a 28-year old former seventh round pick with four career starts.

What a Shameian

Linebacker Jamien Sherwood season is off to a bit of a shaky start and the Lions exploited him in coverage to the tune of 127 yards on 10 targets. The only incompletion on a play where he was in coverage was a drop.

A large chunk of that yardage came on Isaac TeSlaa's 49-yard catch and run late in the game, just after the Jets had tied the score, so it was a major momentum shifter. On the play, TeSlaa ran a crossing route which Demario Davis passed off to an oblivious Sherwood, whose eyes remained transfixed on the backfield.

Aside from this, the longest catch credited against him was a 21-yard leaping catch by Jameson Williams on a zone coverage where Sherwood didn't drop deep enough and/or Andre Cisco was too deep.

He had two other catches of more than 10 yards - one on a dump-off underneath to Sione Vaki as he was too deep - and another on this screen pass where Sherwood overreacted to the run action, quickly recovered to get out to the flat, but then found himself easily driven out of the play by Christian Mahogany.

That sums up quite well the decision making process Sherwood is going through on a given play, and how he just doesn't quite have things down yet though.

He also had a bad missed tackle when he appeared to have Jahmyr Gibbs wrapped up, although it was his only one of the game.

Sherwood ended up with eight tackles, so he did have some positives, including this tackle for loss.

However, only one of his other tackles was on a gain of less than six yards and that was a positive play for the offense as it was a three-yard gain on first down from the four-yard line.

Sherwood, who - to be fair to him - only gave up 22 yards on six targets through the first two games, has been inconsistent but the Jets will hope that he and Davis gain chemistry over the course of the season, so that they are finishing each others sentences by the business end of the year. That would be much like CJ Mosley and Quincy Williams eventually did.

Interestingly, though, he was off the field for four snaps as the Jets operated with just one off-ball linebacker on some plays.

Ossai with my little eye

Joseph Ossai's Jets debut was hardly memorable. He had as many missed tackles as he had tackles, and the two tackles he was credited with came on a seven yard run and a successful short-yardage conversion. He also failed to register any pressure on 11 pass rush attempts.

Furthermore, Ossai was particularly lucky that two of his worst mistakes weren't really punished.

First, he badly whiffed on a tackle when Gibbs cut back against the grain for an 18-yard gain but Sherwood was held at the second level, negating the play.

After that, he was in coverage on Sam LaPorta on one play and first got away with a blatant hold, then got beaten badly over the middle only for Sherwood to basically bail him out again with a pressure that caused Jared Goff's pass to be off-target on what should have been an easy first down. On this occasion, the Lions got a first down anyway due to an unrelated penalty on Azareye'h Thomas.

Ossai only played 28 snaps so he may have been on a pitch count anyway as he returned from his foot injury, but there were a couple of positive flashes.

Here's an example of one of the things he was advertised as being able to bring to the table, as he sets the edge to force a run out wide, so his teammate can stop it for a loss.

Ossai easily and patiently controlled his blocker as he also drew a holding penalty on this play.

The other play on which Ossai stood out was another running play on which he blew past Penei Sewell with an impressive swim move to get into the backfield. Although he wasn't able to affect the run up the middle, he then got in on the stop as the play went for a limited gain.

Hopefully the veteran will look more dynamic as he gets up to game speed, and that will lead to more production.

Cisco Inferno

Andre Cisco is making the most of his opportunity to start with Minkah Fitzpatrick out and he did a decent job on Sunday with six tackles including a third down sack.

Perhaps his best play of the day showcased a quick read and some good range to hold this play to a short gain.

Other than that, he only gave up one catch for five yards, but it was a big one because it came on 4th-and-2 and set up a touchdown. Cisco was too far off the receiver but then compounded the mistake of giving up the completion by also diving past him without making contact, which nearly led to a touchdown as the receiver was almost able to get back up again before he was down by contact.

None of the rest of Cisco's tackles were near the line of scrimmage, including a touchdown saving tackle on TeSlaa's big catch, and - as noted - he may have been too far off on the downfield catch by Williams.

Cisco and Dane Belton are holding the fort for now, and his versatility will come in useful even after Fitzpatrick returns. The Jets will be hoping that Fitzpatrick will upgrade them when he's back, but realistically the safeties are doing okay without him so it's difficult to see where it will make any significant difference.

Let's review the key contributions...

Kicking game - Jase the Ace

Kicker Jason Sanders remains perfect since his horrible week one miss after hitting a 42-yard field goal and one extra point. The Jets now need to put him on the roster if they're going to continue to use him because he's no longer eligible to be elevated from the practice squad.

He also had two touchbacks on Sunday, and two of Detroit's three returns came on kicks fielded inside the five-yard line.

Punter Austin McNamara had an uncharacteristic error on a punt from near midfield. That ended up being just a 26-yarder. It's possible he tried to put a funky spin on the ball in an effort to induce the Lions' return man into muffing it near his own goal line but this clearly backfired.

McNamara only punted two other times and these were both good. He landed a 47-yarder inside the 15 which was fair-caught and launched a 55-yard bomb on the first play of the second quarter. That was actually the last time either team punted all day.

Kick coverage - Moore's the pity

The Jets' kick coverage units were so good last season but they've been awful so far this year. The team has given up the 10th most kickoff return yardage and the 2nd-highest punt return yardage total.

Yes, they've been without Kene Nwangwu, and now also Marcelino McCrary-Ball and Arian Smith. In addition, Qwan'tez Stiggers missed some time on Sunday with a hand injury. They also lost some of their more productive tacklers from last year in Mykal Walker, Isaiah Oliver and Ja'Sir Taylor. The group they have out there right now is not getting the job done.

In Sunday's game, Jacob Saylors almost broke a touchdown return, with Malachi Moore making a saving tackle near midfield after Sanders got juked. Saylors also had a 37-yard return. Punt returner Tom Saunders added an 11-yard punt return.

Troy Reeder, Isaiah Davis and Braiden McGregor were the main players that got blocked off from stopping the longest return. McGregor in particular got manhandled by his blocker.

On the other long return, Andrew Beck missed the tackle as Davis once again got blocked off. Reeder combined with Trevin Wallace to make the tackle.

One other return, fielded by Kennedy, was returned out to the 37 but this was negated by a hold on Beck. Davis and Kingsley Enagbare were in on the tackle.

In his first regular season snap as an NFL gunner, Malik McClain knocked DJ Reed to the ground and forced a fair catch. He got downfield well on the next one too, but that was the shanked punt which took a bad bounce. The last punt was a longer one so neither gunner could prevent a return but Stiggers got off his block to make the tackle.

Return game - Must be the season of the Pritch

2025 preseason darling Jamaal Pritchett finally saw his first NFL action in Sunday's game and he got one touch, on a 27-yard kickoff return out to the 26. Jelani Woods wasn't able to sustain his block on that one.

Isaiah Williams still handed the majority of these duties but didn't have much success as he didn't manage to return one out past the 31 and was stuffed at the 20 on one, on which Woods and Braelon Allen got badly beaten.

McClain's man made the tackle on two of the other three returns and Allen arguably got away with a block in the back on one.

Williams didn't get a chance to return either of the Lions' two punts. He left one to bounce near the goal line and it was downed inside the 10. The other saw him have to make a fair catch after the gunner beat Jarvis Brownlee.

Plays where the call was obvious, uncontroversial or not visible on broadcast footage

Jets Penalties

• Delay of game, caused by Kenyon Sadiq being slow to get into position as he had to check first with Geno Smith. The snap actually wasn't that late compared with some of the ones the Jets got away with last week. This came with six seconds left in the first quarter and was the first flag on either team.
• Dylan Parham holding penalty to negate an 11-yard pass to Braelon Allen. DJ Wonnum got upfield with a power move and Parham had him wrapped up as he leveraged past him.
• Olu Fashanu holding on a play where Smith was sacked anyway. Aidan Hutchinson got outside leverage and Fashanu reached across his chest for the hold, as he let go a beat too late. Smith stepped up and Hutchinson span off the block to get in on the tackle for a half-sack anyway.

Lions Penalties

• Holding on Brock Wright that was declined anyway because the run was blown up for a loss. In a similar situation and position last week the Jets accepted the holding penalty and the Packers went on to get a first down and ultimately scored their first touchdown, so maybe Aaron Glenn learned from that. Wright clearly grabbed Joseph Ossai after he penetrated into the backfield.
• Pass interference on Rock Ya-Sin that was declined anyway because Garrett Wilson made a diving catch. Ya-Sin had a slight grab of Wilson and he made his break across his face.
• False start on rookie tackle Blake Miller. Early flinch.
• Penei Sewell offensive holding to negate an 18-yard Jahmyr Gibbs run. Reached around Jamien Sherwood's shoulder at the second level and tackled him to the ground to prevent the tackle.
• Illegal formation on the 4th-and-1 play that was stuffed anyway. Detroit had three players on the left side of the formation and none of them were on the line of scrimmage.

Penalties warranting further discussion or explanation

Jets Penalties

• Offensive pass interference on Malik McClain. McClain collided with a Lions linebacker, preventing him from getting out to the flat to cover Kenyon Sadiq, but the pass was incomplete anyway. It looked like an inadvertent collision but if you watch carefully you can see McClain changes direction slightly to initiate the contact, so he didn't quite have his angles right in terms of making it look like his route just so happened to get in the way of a defender.
• Illegal hands to the face on Azareye'h Thomas after a 2nd-and-10 incompletion. This was unfortunate for Thomas who put his hands up for the jam in press coverage and Isaac TeSlaa ducked his head to initiate contact with one of his hands. There was no grab or forceful contact to the head and if it's that easy to draw a penalty you wonder why receivers don't do this all the time.

Lions Penalties

• Holding on Ty Nowaske on the opening kickoff of the second half. Maybe a slight grab on Andrew Beck, but this one looked a bit soft.
• DJ Reed pass interference on Wilson near the pylon. Reed acted like he thought this was clean coverage, but he very clearly had a hold of Wilson's inside arm before the ball arrived.
• Reed pass interference on Wilson's fourth quarter touchdown catch. Another sneaky attempt at getting away with it by Reed, who contested the pass with his left hand but had a handful of Wilson's jersey around the chest with his right.

Notable no-calls etc

Here were some of the other notable missed calls, replay situations and controversial moments:

• Smith had an easy first down on the first possession but opted to slide short of the marker. While he crossed the marker before being touched, the officials were correct to mark it short at the point where the ball was when he gave himself up.
• Amon-Ra had an early diving catch which was clearly incomplete as the ball rolled along the turf as he tried to secure it. The officials soon corrected this.
• There was some confusion over Wilson's diving catch in the first half, not that it mattered because there was pass interference anyway. This was eventually ruled a catch because the ball was knocked away from Wilson after he landed out of bounds with control.
• Sadiq's touchdown catch wasn't completely clean but it was definitely a catch because the ball never hit the turf as Sadiq landed on his back and then secured control.
• TeSlaa could have had a touchdown on a play that was very similar to one in the Chiefs/Colts game last week. He went to ground without being touched and then sprang to his feet and dived into the end zone. Brandon Stephens just about made contact with him while his knee was still in contact with the turf but it was very close.
• Wilson had another diving catch in the second half, at full extension and on his fingertips. This was clean and never hit the turf anyway.
• Isaiah Williams had a catch that was initially incomplete but corrected by replay assist. The initial view looked like his left foot came down out of bounds but the replay showed he already had control with his left foot still on the ground before that last step. It then just came down to whether his right foot came down inbounds and it did, just.
• On Jahmyr Gibbs' game-winning touchdown, he skipped into the end zone and hopped across the goal line, which Kingsley Enagbare took exception to, shoving him to the ground while he was in mid-air. This started a scuffle for which no flags were thrown. Gibbs kinda deserved that because it was bordering on taunting, and Enagbare is well within his rights to hit a runner as he's crossing the goal line.
• On Wilson's touchdown, regardless of the penalty, there was a question over (a) was it a catch and (b) was it a touchdown? Wilson landed on his backside, inbounds, and secured control before his back came down out of bounds. Crucially, he was still inbounds and the ball was across the plane at the moment of control.
• On the play before his game-icing strip sack, Chuck Clark knocked Wilson out of the game with a helmet to helmet hit. If this had been a penalty for a hit on a defenseless receiver, the Jets would have had 1st-and-10 from the 11 with still one timeout and 51 seconds remaining (but no Wilson).

Sanders is being elevated for the third and final time and the team will either have to sign him to the roster or release him next week. Presumably they will sign him and release Blake Grupe, who will then be signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Aaron Glenn had already announced that both Tyler Johnson and Sterling Shepherd were ready and that one would be elevated to back up the top three along with Malik McClain, who was already signed to the roster. Clearly, Shepherd got the nod this week.

The fact that they're also adding Pritchett - who along with McClain will be making his NFL debut - may be connected to the fact that Adonai Mitchell has been dealing with a finger injury. However, with the Jets being so light at the position, perhaps the Jets are going to get him to return punts so Isaiah Williams (who muffed two punts last week) can concentrate on his offensive role.
