Special teams review: Jets at Bears

Special teams didn't play a big part in the outcome of yesterday's game, but it could have done.

Let's review the key contributions...

Kick Coverage - Charone Meek

This was a huge opportunity for the Jets to improbably get themselves back into the game:

Tarik Cohen's moment of madness could have led to a turnover which would've set the Jets up in the red zone to potentially pull within a score with all three timeouts intact and five minutes still on the clock.

CHARONE PEAKE should have lit Cohen up as soon as he went for the ball. TRENTON CANNON, who is usually the first guy down the field, was quick to react to the muff, but just not quick enough.

Cannon once again impressed as a gunner, blowing past a double team on one punt and getting downfield fast to draw an illegal block in the back penalty. He was also in on two tackles.

ERIC TOMLINSON was also in on a couple of tackles in punt coverage although he also let Cohen sneak up the sideline for a few extra yards on his longest return of the day; a 20-yarder.

NEVILLE HEWITT blew up the only kickoff return of the day at the 20. However, he also made a mistake by downing a punt that was bouncing towards the Bears endzone and compounded that mistake by not fielding the ball cleanly, which allowed the Bears a free attempt at returning it with no risk of a muff and the ball to be returned to the spot where Hewitt touched it even if they didn't make any yardage.

Return game - A bad Campbell

ANDRE ROBERTS didn't get any chances to do anything in the return game as every Bears kickoff went for a touchback. He fair caught two punts and the only one he tried to return got called back because of a block in the back away from the ball by new Jet IBRAHEIM CAMPBELL.

Kicking Game - Lachlan Headwinds

Punter LACHLAN EDWARDS had a tough time in the windy conditions. He punted eight times and only two of these went further than 45 yards. That included a 32-yarder shanked out of bounds and a 35-yarder than was returned eight yards.

Kicker JASON MYERS made his only field goal - a 42-yarder - and had two touchbacks on his three kickoffs. He's been a bright spot on a special teams unit that has been a lot better than in recent years despite having some of their key contributors out.
