Special Teams Review - Jets at Titans

The Jets put together their most complete special teams performance of the season, but wasted it by being so poor on offense. Let's review the key contributions anyway...

Kicking Game - Just like Lach-work

Kicker JASON MYERS continues to have a remarkable season. He made five of five field goals in yesterday's game, including a 54-yarder. He also had six touchbacks on seven kickoffs.

Myers has made a career-high 28 field goals, missing just two, and has a shot at breaking the Jets' all time record if he can make seven more over the next four weeks. Jim Turner, the current record holder, made 34 of 46 field goals in the Jets Super Bowl winning season, although he had 43 extra points as well, more than twice as many as Myers has through 12 games. That was only a 14-game season too.

Punter LACHLAN EDWARDS didn't have as much success this week though. Of his six kicks, two were touchbacks. He had only three touchbacks entering this week but now he has five - a career-high. One of the touchbacks was almost downed at the one-yard line by TRENTON CANNON and the other was on a 67-yard punt, so that was still a healthy net.

Edwards seemed to have some issues with the wind as a few of his kicks were low and short, but the Titans didn't return any of them.

The Jets also came up with a couple of blocked kicks. For the second time this season, KEVIN PIERRE-LOUIS broke through the line to get his hands on a punt. That was a completely blown protection because even if Pierre-Louis didn't block it, BRANDON COPELAND was right there as well.

HENRY ANDERSON also contributed by blocking an extra point. LEONARD WILLIAMS played a role in that too, by penetrating through the line.

Kick Coverage - Hewitt like a dude

The Jets didn't get many chance to cover kicks this week, with Darius Jennings returning the only non-touchback out to the 35. NEVILLE HEWITT made the tackle, his 11th special teams tackle of the season.

On punts, one went out of bounds, one was downed by Cannon and two potentially returnable kicks were fair-caught by Adoree' Jackson, although CHARONE PEAKE did beat the vice on one of those to perhaps influence that decision.

Return game - Burning Roberts

ANDRE ROBERTS also continued his surprising season with a 59-yard kickoff return on the opening kickoff of the second half. Hewitt made a great block downfield after JORDAN LEGGETT got just enough of his man to spring Roberts.

Roberts was only able to return one punt for four yards on a play where RASHARD ROBINSON and DARRYL ROBERTS were double-teaming the gunner on that side and messed up.

Despite Desmond King's touchdown last night, Roberts maintains the NFL lead in terms of punt return average and also leads the league in kickoff return attempts, kickoff return yardage and total return yardage. He's second in punt return yardage and seventh in kickoff return average.
