Special Teams Review: Jets-Bucs

We've been breaking down this week's game. We conclude today's postgame analysis with a look at the special teams.

Let's review the key contributions...

Kicking game - Will Power

Will McDonald made a sensational play which would have gone down as one of the great plays in Jets history had they held on to win, but will ultimately just be a footnote. Leaping over the line, blocking the game-clinching field goal and picking it up on the bounce to run for a 50-yard touchdown to give the Jets a late lead was a phenomenal effort.

McDonald had been coming off the edge and getting closer and closer to a block all day, although he got a little over-exuberant on one play and was called for running into the kicker.

The Jets also got pressure on one punt with Cam Jones appearing to be the player who got closest.

Nick Folk was perfect on two field goals and three extra points, although Armand Membou allowed pressure off his edge a couple of times. Folk's extra point with 1:54 to go could be considered a clutch kick as it gave the Jets the one-point lead.

Kicking off didn't go so well for Folk, who had a short one to start the game and then was replaced by punter Austin McNamara for the rest of the day. McNamara was a bit better with one angled kick and one that bounced in front of the return man to slow down the return game.

McNamara's punting was also solid, as both his punts were long, high and blown up immediately.

Return game - I want to Braek free

The Jets got Braelon Allen involved in the return game this week but he seems to lack the speed and vision to be effective in that role. His numbers weren't too bad but his last return, on a short kick, saw him just run into a big pile as Qwan'tez Stiggers didn't sustain his block.

Isaiah Davis remains more effective in that role, breaking a tackle to get out near the 40 on one return. He averaged 27 yards per return.

Jeremy Ruckert and the debuting Dean Clark each had a good block. That's two weeks in a row with a positive mention for Ruckert, who was nothing but negatives last year.

On punts, Isaiah Williams didn't get a chance, as he had two fair catches on short punts and one that was shanked out of bounds. His best play of the day saw him pretend he was about to make a fair catch to fool the gunners into not realizing the ball would bounce near the goal line until it was too late to prevent the touchback.

Kick coverage - Clark forces at work

The Jets' gunners, Stiggers and Arian Smith, each made a sensational play this week to blow up the punt returner as soon as he caught the ball.

In kickoff coverage this week, three Jets were credited with two tackles each; Clark, Davis and Marcelino McCrary-Ball who now leads the team with seven in three games. McCrary-Ball made his tackle without a helmet on.

Finally, Andrew Beck almost made a good play on a bouncing McNamara kickoff but missed his tackle at the 14.

We'll be back with the 3-on-D and 3-on-O over the next few days...
