Special Teams Review: Jets-Dolphins
We've been breaking down this week's game. We conclude today's postgame analysis with a look at the special teams.
Let's review the key contributions...
Kicking game - Stay Folk-ussed
Nick Folk had a solid game as he made an extra point and field goals of 50 and 58 yards, with the latter being the longest of his career. He remains perfect so far in his return to the Jets.
Folk was also back on kickoffs, which included one onside kick that was poor and easily recovered. His kickoff depth this week was pretty good, but all three were returned past the 30. Still, each was stopped before the 35, which means it was better than a touchback.
Punter Austin McNamara entered the week as PFF's top graded punter and fifth in net average. There were no returns on his two punts this week as one was downed and one was fair-caught at the 10.
Once again, Will McDonald had pressure on a couple of kicks.
Return game - Bye-saiah?
If Xavier Gipson was cut for losing a crucial fumble on a kickoff, then Isaiah Williams could suffer the same fate. Having weathered the storm of a rough first half to get within seven, New York were due to start with the ball in the second half, but the offense never got to take the field due to Williams' mistake and were soon back in a 14-point hole.
Williams' main role is as the punt returner but things didn't get any better for him there as he blundered by taking a fair catch at his own three-yard line. The Dolphins also had one punt that went out of bounds and downed one at the goal line.
The only return Williams had was an 18-yarder on a long punt, on which Qwan'tez Stiggers did well at the vice position.
Braelon Allen also returned one kickoff but it ended his night as he suffered a knee injury on the tackle after running into the back of Isaiah Davis. Allen also lost the ball and was lucky to be ruled down.
Davis did well as he averaged 36 yards per return on his three runbacks with another called back due to a Mark Robinson block in the back. There were good blocks from Malachi Moore twice (although one looked like a possible hold) and Andrew Beck. Beck also had a good block on the return where Williams fumbled, as did Mykal Walker.
Kick coverage - Freed from Isaiah
There's not much to report on the kick coverage this week as the only players credited with a tackle in kick coverage were Walker, Moore and Isaiah Oliver, who had two. As noted, the three kickoffs were all returned to between the 30 and 35. Dean Clark was blocked out on one of these.
There was no return on either punt as the gunners Stiggers and Arian Smith got downfield well to force a fair catch and down the ball respectively.
We'll be back with the 3-on-D and 3-on-O over the next few days...
