Special Teams Review: Jets-Jaguars
We've been breaking down this week's game. We conclude today's postgame analysis with a look at the special teams.
Let's review the key contributions...
Kicking game - A season McNa-marred by one bad game
Having had a superb season, Austin McNamara had a poor game on Sunday. He only punted twice, but one was a 25-yard shank from near midfield. The other was downed at the 10-yard line, so that wasn't bad.
It was his work on kickoffs that really dragged his performance down, though. He had one that went out of bounds for a penalty to give the Jaguars the ball at the 40. His numbers on the other four weren't good either, although to be fair you can't pin this on him unless the direction was inaccurate because all his kickoffs were fielded inside the five.
On that kickoff that went out of bounds, Nick Folk had to perform holder duties after the ball fell off the tee twice. In such situations, the holder is a legal 12th man but has to run off before they are involved in the play.
One thing McNamara did well, at least, was holding on four successful Folk kicks, including a 51-yard field goal. A couple of these came on less than perfect Thomas Hennessy snaps.
Kick coverage - Mykal King
This was one of the worst games of the season for the Jets in kick coverage as they gave up kickoff returns of 43 and 50 yards. Two others were stopped short of the 30 with Mykal Walker in on the stop on each of them, though.
Walker also made the tackle on one of the long returns, as he and Ja'Sir Taylor ran down LaQuint Allen from behind. Walker had initially been blocked out of the play, as had Khalil Herbert, and Malachi Moore overpursued.
Moore and Isaiah Davis had missed tackles on the other long return but Andrew Beck made the stop.
The Jets didn't give up any punt return yardage because each of McNamara's punts were downed (by Davis and Hennessy).
Return game - Tre Mauvais
As was the case last season, the Jets didn't get a chance to return any kickoffs as the Jaguars boomed a touchback every single time. That ended up being nine total touchbacks on Sunday.
In addition, Jacksonville only punted twice but Isaiah Williams still got a chance to shine. His spectacular 50-yard touchdown return was negated by a very dubious call on Tre Brown for blocking the gunner out of bounds, but he had an equally spectacular 9-yard return where he broke a couple of tackles.
Brown was at fault on that one with the gunner beating him, although that player then missed the tackle.
We'll be back with the 3-on-D and 3-on-O over the next few days...
