Special Teams Review: Jets-Raiders

We've been breaking down this week's game against the Raiders. We wrap up the postgame analysis with a look at the special teams.

Let's review the key contributions...

Kicking game - Thomas Poorstead

On a day when he was going up against arguably the league's best punter, AJ Cole, Thomas Morstead had a tough time. He had one good punt but two went for touchbacks and he outkicked his coverage on another.

Kicker Greg Zuerlein was busy and did a solid job with four field goals and four touchbacks but it wasn't enough. Max Mitchell allowed pressure on one of his kicks.

The Jets desperately tried to block Cole's last punt but the Raiders picked up the rush well. Jamien Sherwood got closest.

Kick coverage - Sher Thing

Sherwood had a good day on specials with two tackles; one near the 25 on a kickoff and one to save a touchdown near the sideline on DeAndre Carter's 35-yard return.

Carter would later have another decent return. On each one, the gunners were at fault as Irv Charles was late to get there and Brandin Echols was blocked off on one and missed the tackle on the other. Echols also failed to down a punt near the goal line.

Ashtyn Davis and Sam Eguavoen were also credited with tackles.

Return game - Just the Gip

Xavier Gipson had yet another unproductive game on returns. His only kickoff runback was an awful decision that saw him stuffed at the 13 and his only punt return went for just five.

DJ Reed stayed in as the vice and got beaten on one punt that was fair caught by Gipson and it was Bryce Hall that was beaten on the punt return that was stuffed for a short gain.

The Jets continue to miss Justin Hardee in all areas of special teams.

We'll be back with the 3-on-D and 3-on-O over the next few days...
