Three on O: Fashanu, Hall, Mitchell
After each game, we'll be highlighting three defensive and three offensive players and looking in detail at their performance. We'll wrap up today with the offense:
Absolutely Oludicrous
The Jets' offensive line fell back to earth a little this week after a dominant week one performance. The running game never got going and, despite starting well, there were issues in pass protection later on.
Left tackle Olu Fashanu looks good in both disciplines though. His athleticism and ability to drive at the point of attack stood out in the offensive line film, even though it didn't translate to much success.
Here's one of the best blocks he made, pulling and sealing off a cornerback to set the edge. Unfortunately, the first down was negated because Isaiah Williams held Lukas Van Ness (and probably didn't need to).

You'll also see some of Fashanu's other good blocking in the gifs below.
Fashanu also stood out in pass protection, consistently doing a good job of staying in front of his man and controlling his block.
Despite this, he was involved in all four of the plays where Geno Smith was sacked. This doesn't actually reflect as badly as you might think on Fashanu though, because none were really his fault.
One was really a coverage sack as he initially managed to re-anchor against a Van Ness bull rush, the second saw his man stunt inside and nobody picked him up, the third was Breece Hall getting badly beaten and Fashanu's man getting a cheap half-sack after his inside move had been repelled and the fourth was again a cheap half-sack as Fashanu forced his man the long way round but Van Ness beat Armand Membou to force Smith into them.
The Jets' tackles are definitely a current strength and project to be even better over time, but Membou had been getting most of the attention. Fashanu is showing he's got a ton of promise in his own right.
Is that Hall you've got?
This was Hall's best run of the day, a 14-yard run behind a pulling Fashanu.

Unfortunately, his other 15 carries netted just 15 yards. That was pretty consistent too, as he was 8-for-8 at halftime.
With that said, he was a big factor in the passing game with five catches including two first downs. This was a huge play at the end of the third quarter, as Hall found the space he was unable to running between the tackles all day.

Those contributions meant that Hall actually ended up with a creditable contribution of 92 yards on 22 touches, so at least they didn't abandon him.
Although his overall contribution with the ball wasn't too bad, Hall's pass blocking contribution was disappointing. He had two plays where he got beaten for a pressure and then, in overtime, the sack he gave up proved extremely costly.
So far, Hall - who had 24 of his 29 rushing yards after contact - has had one great game and one disappointing one. He probably needs the offensive line to be more consistent if most of his performances this season will look like week one did.
Mitch Pickings
Adonai Mitchell had a monster first half as he caught five passes for 52 yards and also drew two penalties - one for pass interference and one for taunting.
Smith went to him five times on third down in the first half and the only one that wasn't successful was a first down anyway due to the taunting call.
Here's one of his third down conversions, once again behind Fashanu on a screen:

After halftime, Mitchell wasn't used as much. He was only targeted twice and neither of these were on third down as the Jets were just 2-for-8 in third down situations. He did make a good tackle to elude a defender and fall forward for a first down on his lone second half catch.

Mitchell also deserves some credit for his blocking, as he did a good job on Braelon Allen's touchdown run and down the field on the long Hall catch and run.
It's been a good start to the year for Mitchell, who is hopefully well on the way to a career year. Let's hope this finger injury he just picked up doesn't derail things.
