Three on O: Williams, Okorafor, Woods
After each game, we'll be highlighting three defensive and three offensive players and looking in detail at their performance. For a change, we'll start today with the offense:
Isaiah in the hole!
On a day when the Jets' offense didn't do much, Isaiah Williams proved to be their only big play threat. His 58-yard touchdown was easily the longest play of his career and the first time he's ever really gone deep in an NFL game. In fact, it eclipsed his single game high for receiving yards.
Williams was actually the only Jets player to record a 15-yard gain on the day. His other catch also went for 15 yards:
On this play, Williams is wide open as the linebacker and cornerback collide but Geno Smith, having turned his back to execute the play-fake, saw Williams late and seemed to rush his throw which Williams had to slow down for and reach down to grab. That may have cost him some yardage after the catch.
Earlier in the game, Williams let Smith down as his only other target was off his hands, although a review of the wide angle footage shows that the safety was coming up to probably blow it up for a short gain anyway.
Williams has had a poor start to the year on special teams, but he's been making a minor impact on offense with 10 catches as he is benefiting from Omar Cooper being out in terms of his playing time.
You probably shouldn't be putting any money on him being the Jets' MVP again this year. Although, to be fair, he arguably was their offensive MVP on Sunday.
Chuk'd out
Can we really include a player in a weekly column that is widely regarded as one of the internet's most comprehensive Jets breakdowns when he only had one offensive snap? Just try and stop us!
Besides, this one snap was highly significant for Chukwuma Okorafor for a couple of reasons. First of all, the Jets had such a small number of offensive plays that his one-snap contribution actually represented a significant percentage. Secondly, it was his first offensive snap since week one in 2024 when he famously had a bit of a meltdown with the Patriots. While he was on the bench and played special teams all year last year, he never saw the field on offense.
Before we even get to Okorafor's big moment, it's worth noting what happened on the play before, which was a four-yard run on 2nd-and-8 from the Bears' 11-yard line.
Basically, Armand Membou had his helmet knocked off and got poked in the eye, which is why Okorafor had to come into the game on third down.
This isn't the AFR, but it has to be noted here that this was a BLATANT hands to the face penalty on the Bears, which should have given the Jets a 1st-and-goal from inside the five-yard line.
Anyway, let's see how Okorafor handled this big third down assignment.
Yeesh.
Watching from the wider angle, you can at least say that Smith didn't have an open receiver so it's not like if Okorafor made his block it would have been an easy touchdown. With that said, was Garrett Wilson basically tackled at the goal line in another clear example of a missed call by the officials? Of course he was.
Ultimately, we shouldn't jump to too much of a conclusion on Okorafor based off of one snap with him coming into the game cold in a key third down situation against a defense that was playing well, but it hardly fills you with confidence as to what might happen if either of the tackles gets hurt again.
Perhaps the Jets should look to turn to Max Mitchell first, if that arises.
Jelani Hammer
Tight end Jelani Woods can relate to Okorafor going such a long time without playing, since he missed two full seasons before sitting on the practice squad and only getting brief action at the end of last year.
However, this year, Woods has legitimately established himself as someone who makes a contribution, having already played 74 total snaps. His blocking was impressive last year and Woods has continued to make good contributions in that area.
Woods was a central figure in the first drive of the second half, which proved significant. This was the drive where the Jets opened up by going to Braelon Allen four times in a row and he picked up 26 yards to move them into Bears territory.
On three of those four runs, Woods did an excellent job (and wasn't on the field for the other). He drove Devin Bush 10 yards out of the play here. Didn't seem too bored on that one did ya, Devin?
However, the fifth play of the drive from inside the Bears' 40 was another Allen carry but this got blown up for a five-yard loss as Woods let a guy go right past him.
This may have been Wilson's fault though, as Woods clearly thought his responsibility was Bush again.
Anyway, faced with a 2nd-and-15, Woods stepped up with a catch in the flat, which he took upfield for a gain of 11 to the 33. However, Smith took a big sack on 3rd down (again with Woods not on the field) and the Jets ultimately punted while down by 10 points.
The Jets will be pleased with how Woods is contributing as a rotational player, especially with Mason Taylor out. He may never be a major contributor for them but these are the types of useful players that add good depth to a team.
Three-on-D will follow tomorrow.
