UFL update #2: Ex-Jets coaches and players not returning
The UFL gets underway this weekend and we recently provided an update on ex-Jets players who are signed to teams this season.
Today, we're also going to report on some ex-Jets who are not returning to the UFL this season and ex-Jets coaches now coaching in this league.
As noted yesterday, the Jets have signed four UFL/XFL players recently who are now back in the NFL: Offensive linemen Kohl Levao and Liam Fornadel are still on the Jets roster, kicker Harrison Mevis is with the Rams and quarterback Adrian Martinez was re-signed by the 49ers after having made his NFL debut last year.
Defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey was also back in the NFL last season, although he was released earlier this month and is currently a free agent.
Safety Kai Nacua was drafted back into the UFL this offseason but the 31-year old opted to retire instead.
The rest of the notable ex-Jets players who were in the UFL last season but will not be in 2026 fall into the following categories:
Now playing in the CFL: Defensive end Bradlee Anae, cornerback Derrick Langford, linebacker Caleb Johnson
Were with a UFL team but cut before the season: Offensive lineman Alec Lindstrom, running back Kalen Ballage, defensive tackle Freedom Akinmoladun
Currently without a team: Offensive linemen Derrick Kelly II and Vitaliy Gurman, cornerbacks Myles Jones and Rachad Wildgoose
Finally, let's close up withj an update on ex-Jets coaches that are now coaching at this level. That doesn't include Anthony Becht, who played tight end and was a broadcaster with the Jets organization but never coached. He is a head coach for the fourth straight year although he did move from St Louis to the Orlando Storm; one of the three new teams in the league this year.
Three of the league's eight offensive coordinators were once on the Jets: Todd Haley (Columbus), Noel Mazzone (Dallas) and Eric Price (Houston). There's also a defensive coordinator, Blake Williams (DC). Williams is the son of Gregg Williams, who was the Jets' defensive coordinator in 2019 and 2020 and had his son on his staff.
In addition, Todd Washington is on the St Louis staff as an offensive line and tight ends coach and La'Roi Glover is a defensive line coach on Becht's Storm staff.
We'll update you on how the ex-Jets fare and who is a standout in this league during and after the season.
