What did Todd Bowles say after Tuesday's practice?

Here were some of the more interesting comments from Todd Bowles following Tuesday's practice:

  • The offense was crisper today.
  • It was good for Bilal Powell to get his feet wet and he has fresh legs but needs to get back up to speed.
  • Lucky Whitehead broke his foot but it's unclear if he'll need surgery or how long he'll be out. They will keep looking at what they have in the return game before they decide to bring in someone else.
  • Marquess Wilson has a sore hip.
  • Christian Hackenberg is more comfortable with what he's doing and is starting to put some good practices together. Bowles agreed with John Morton's comments that Hackenberg is basically still a rookie, on the basis that this is the first time he's been able to get a decent number of reps. He doesn't regret the redshirt approach because "he was gonna redshirt with the guys we had last year, regardless". When asked what he's better at than he was last year, Bowles implied it's more the fact that he's more comfortable and this helps him mentally.
  • They finished early today because they had practiced fast and got a lot done. It wasn't a reward for the players. Generally they've been trying to push the tempo to get in as many plays as possible and improve conditioning but they'll mix up how often they bring that tempo to game situations.
  • When asked if he enjoys coaching two rookie safeties having been one himself, he said he enjoys coaching everyone but it's good to see the rookies have success because they work hard and are good people.
  • They haven't decided on playing time or rotations for the next preseason game yet and haven't started to think about in-season gameplans in terms of how the defensive linemen will play together. Bowles downplayed the importance of getting production from all three of the stars on the line, saying that they need everyone to produce and they all just need to focus on doing their job.
  • Dexter McDougle is benefiting from being healthy, having had issues last year. He reiterated yesterday's comments that he showed up in great shape and has worked hard.
  • He's happy with Demario Davis and Darron Lee's recent performance in coverage, but says they are still learning how to play together. He's confident that will come, because they have great communication.

We'll let you know if anyone else says anything interesting.
