After Further Review: Jets-Bucs

By popular demand, we're again going to have a post after each game that breaks down some of the controversial decisions from the officiating crew in the game.

Penalty Count

Bucs 14-124 (leading to three Jets first downs)
Jets 7-81 (leading to three Bucs first downs)

Note: This does not include penalties that are declined or off-set.

Plays where the call was obvious, uncontroversial or not visible on broadcast footage

Jets Penalties

  • Illegal formation. This was Arian Smith's fault because he wasn't on the line of scrimmage. That's his second straight game with a penalty for lining up wrong.
  • Olu Fashanu holding. This one was pretty clear as he was beaten by Yaya Diaby and held him.
  • Will McDonald running into the kicker. McDonald was getting closer and closer to blocking one coming off the edge but was lucky not to get called for roughing here, and was probably offside too. The non-roughing call was correct because McDonald didn't hit the plant leg but it was still a bit reckless and any time you knock the kicker down, there's a risk of an automatic first down.
  • False start on Fashanu.

Bucs Penalties

  • Horse collar tackle on Logan Hall. Obvious call as he dragged Tyrod Taylor down.
  • Lavonte David pass interference on Mason Taylor. Pretty obvious grab at the top of the route.
  • Luke Haggard offensive holding. Basically tackled Jowon Briggs to the ground as he was being driven onto his back.
  • Offensive holding on Mike Evans. Held onto Sauce Gardner's arm to prevent him from keeping contain. Baker Mayfield may also have held him on the same play.
  • Haggard offensive holding to negate a 1st-and-goal at the five. Very clear handful of jersey as Quinnen Williams beat him into the backfield.
  • Graham Barton holding on McDonald. Very clear as McDonald beat Barton who reached across him.
  • Elijah Klein holding on Williams. Similar, as he reached across to prevent Williams from going by him.
  • Yaya Diaby lined up in the neutral zone.
  • False start on the center Ben Bredeson.
  • Klein holding again, this time on Leonard Taylor III. Grabbed him from behind, probably unnecessarily.
  • Another Bredeson false start.

Penalties warranting further discussion or explanation

Jets Penalties

  • Quinnen Williams face mask penalty. This didn't look clear at all from the angles shown on the broadcast. If did have his hand on the face mask, it looked like he let go immediately without any grab or twist.
  • Pass interference on Gardner. You knew there was going to be a penalty on 3rd-and-29 after the Jets decided to accept a penalty after making a stop on 3rd-and-19 and this was a really soft call. Gardner jammed effectively at the line and seemed to be in perfect position on a ball that the receiver had no real chance of making a play on. He rested his hand on the receiver's arm momentarily but didn't grab it or impede the receiver's attempt to catch the ball. Unless there was some other contact earlier on which wasn't apparent from the broadcast footage, the Jets were unlucky here.
  • Fashanu holding. There didn't seem to be anything that Fashanu did on this play, so it was most likely on Armand Membou and they announced the wrong number. Membou at least was half-beaten and had a bit of a grab, but if it was on him, it was kind of soft.
  • Mason Taylor illegal shift. Tyrod Taylor didn't give the Jets enough time to get set here, as Garrett Wilson and Mason Taylor were both moving and then weren't set for a second before the snap.
  • Micheal Clemons face mask. Again, unfortunate for Clemons because he seemed to grab Mayfield's shoulder in the pocket, not the face mask.

Bucs Penalties

  • Ryan Miller offensive holding on Deuce Carter on the edge. Maybe held onto his block a beat too long but the call was a bit soft on this occasion.
  • Jamel Dean pass interference to negate an interception. There was some contact here at the top of the route but the Jets were perhaps lucky as Tyler Johnson slipped a bit.

Notable no-calls etc

Here were some of the other notable missed calls, replay situations and controversial moments:

  • Diaby clearly jumped offside at the end of the first quarter but the officials were correct that the game clock had already expired.
  • A flag was picked up on an obvious holding penalty on whoever was blocking Quincy Williams but it was blown up for a loss anyway so didn't really matter.
  • Wilson got away with an illegal shift on one play.
  • Wilson was marked short of a first down on a play where it looked like he might have had it.
  • The officials picked up the flag at the end of a play where Ko Kieft was scuffling with a few Jets players but it probably didn't escalate to anything flag-worthy.
  • Williams almost had a forced fumble on Mayfield but the ball was correctly ruled incomplete as it did come out of Mayfield's hand going forwards.
  • Wilson was blatantly held down the field by McCollum on one play.
  • On a play where Mayfield scrambled for a first down on third and long, Marcelino McCrary-Ball had his helmet ripped off by Klein and the officials ignored it.
  • Replay assist gave Tyler Johnson a first down after he was originally ruled short.
  • Allen Lazard was very lucky his fourth down touchdown was upheld. That ends the game there and then if overruled. It did not appear he maintained control after the ball hit the turf but it wasn't completely clear so strictly speaking the officials were right not to overturn it.
  • Clemons was being held for about five seconds on Mayfield's late game scramble.
  • McDonald's incredible field goal block was perfectly legal as he lined up in a legal position and jumped the line without making contact.
  • Emeka Egbuka's late sideline catch was ruled incomplete and again the evidence that this should be overturned was not clear enough, although they do often favor the receiver in such cases.
