Roster News: Jets sign LB Phillips to active roster

The Jets have announced the Sheldrick Redwine release that we reported earlier and confirmed the corresponding move:

As with Adrian Colbert, Phillips has already had his two allotted practice squad elevations for the season so he now needs to be on the 53-man roster to be active on gameday unless it's as a Covid-19 replacement.

Adding him to the roster after he failed to make the roster initially is hopefully just a temporary move as the Jets should have Jamien Sherwood back within a week or two and there are two other linebackers - Blake Cashman and Jarrad Davis - that will be off injured reserve a few weeks after that.

After being forced into a full-time role by the injuries to Sherwood and Cashman on opening day, Phillips was replaced by Quincy Williams in the starting lineup for week two and BJ Goodson could be in line to start on Sunday against Denver, so Phillips is probably mostly just in there for special teams.

Phillips actually led the Jets in defensive and special teams tackles in week one but only played two defensive snaps on Sunday.
